To my Cities Skylines, I’ve bought this DLC and today I want to show you what hides inside. Today’s article will then provide the answer to whether it’s worth it and show my perspective.
If you haven’t seen the trailer yet, you can watch it here…
… first things first, this DLC comes up with a more complex industry specialization. This is enriched by details for a better gaming experience and in addition, it makes the game more “entertaining” than the previous industry specialization. Moreover, you must count and balance the economy, which is also more fun. In the previous version, all you had to do was to “click” and you had a specialized industry. Here, the new system is more realistic.
What are the main changes in this DLC?
This DLC changes everything that you’ve known about the industry in Cities Skylines. It creates a more complex “schema” of the industrial supply chain, which with this DLC looks like this…
… as you can see, the new line of “Industries” DLC differs. There are some specializations which bring “special goods” and these goods must be delivered to “unique factories”. In these factories are then produced “luxury goods”. These are needed by your citizens.
To answer your question, yes, you can play the classic version of Cities Skylines even if you have bought this DLC and do not want to play with this specific line of industry. Still, I’m sure you will love this update.
Industrial areas
Work in industrial areas has completely changed. In the vanilla game, you just make a zone and build orange industrial zones. After this DLC you must make the industrial zone as well, however, you must add a main building and a lot of new buildings on top of that. To make it just a little more realistic, you will have to calculate with all of your actions.
There is a new list of sources with a “money per ton” price:
Material | Zone | Level | ₡ per ton |
---|---|---|---|
Raw Forest Products | Forestry | raw resources | 20 |
Crops | Farming | raw resources | 20 |
Ores | Mining | raw resources | 30 |
Oil | Drilling | raw resources | 40 |
Planed Timber | Forestry | special goods | 150 |
Paper | Forestry | special goods | 150 |
Flour | Farming | special goods | 150 |
Animal Products | Farming | special goods | 150 |
Metal | Mining | special goods | 225 |
Glass | Mining | special goods | 225 |
Plastics | Drilling | special goods | 300 |
Petroleum | Drilling | special goods | 300 |
Goods | Generic | luxury goods | 1000 |
So the best thing you can do is to build a complete supply chain to have luxury goods. That’s what you should export or fill your stores with.
Resource depletion is what you need to know next. As in real life, this feature is implemented in Cities Skylines with the exception of forests and fertile land because they are renewable. But when you work with oil or ore, they may lack natural resources. So in case your city is dependent on these resources, you must search for the next industrial area. Or if your resources disappear, you must import raw resources or search for new areas.
Unique factories
To produce “luxury goods”, you will get “unique factories” which transform “special goods” to the previously mentioned “luxury goods”. You can only build one factory for each type, so you need plan well where to build these factories to get good traffic.
So as you can see, there are four basic factories – furniture, bakery, plastic factory, and industrial steel plant. It can only work for one industrial source. Other factories combine multiple industrial zones that must supply them with products.
A good question is which factory makes more money on 100% production. To answer that, I present you a well arranged table :
Building | Weekly Profit |
---|---|
Sneaker Factory | 6816 |
Shipyard | 6720 |
Modular House Factory | 6640 |
Food Factory | 6000 |
Soft Paper Factory | 4256 |
Industrial Steel Plant | 4160 |
Clothing Factory | 4016 |
Petroleum Refinery | 4000 |
Toy Factory | 3600 |
Electronics Factory | 3040 |
Car Factory | 3040 |
Bakery | 2272 |
Lemonade Factory | 1904 |
Printing Press | 1840 |
Furniture Factory | 1240 |
Household Plastic Factory | 800 |
So if you want to make a lot of money from factories, then I would recommend building a sneaker factory, shipyard, or modular house factory. However, as you can see in the table above, you must combine three industry areas.

New achievements
With this DLC, 7 new achievements have been added to the game to help you with new areas of industry.
My favorite achievements from this DLC are:
- Full Capacity – Level up an Industry Area up to Level 5
- Industry Tycoon – Build all Unique Factories
- Postman – Deliver 1 000 000 units of Mail
- Serial Investor – Build 10 Industry Areas
The rest of the achievements:
- Just Tolling – Build one of each road Toll Booth buildings
- Offshore Assets – Build five Offshore Oil Drilling Platforms
- Scaling Up – Build 10 Warehouse buildings
When playing this DLC, all achievements can be easily achieved.
How to start playing with CS: Industries?
The start is easy. The waste screen has been redesigned with a new special industry screen. First, you have to establish an industrial area and then you have to establish it in some place with mineral resources (the way it was done before).
Industrial areas are like district or university areas in DLC Campus. After you mark the new area, you must create a road to this new industry and build the main building which allows you to build a more specific building in this new area.
After that, you must build industry extractors that create “raw products”. These products must be stored in “storage buildings”. If you have production problems, your citizens will soon help you “import” raw materials to your city. So be prepared to have a strong production.
After that, you must build “industry processors”. These buildings store your “raw materials” and make “special goods”. These goods can be then exported and so you can make money from them. However, if you store it in warehouses and attach them to a “unique factory”, this factory will produce you “luxury goods” for which you will earn much more money.
Is Cities Skylines: Industries worth it?
Yes, yes, and yes. This is probably one of the best DLCs which are in Cities Skylines. It will change a huge part of the game for you in terms of the industry and also give you new ways to play. Yes, I’m may be a little disappointed that they didn’t add more specializations, but otherwise I find this DLC to be something I’ve missed in the game for a long time.
