Increasing the population in Cities Skylines is easy and today I will show you everything that you need to know to increase the population in your city. When your city increases in population, you can reach more milestones. However, don’t forget that sometimes it’s good to stop expanding and just watch your city live its life.
Fix problems of your citizens first
First what you need to do to increase population is avoid surrounding problems around your city. In case you see some problem icons above your buildings, you must focus on solving them. If you see such an icon and don’t know what to do, you must click on a particular building and examine what is the problem…
… there are two types of colours. First is “yellow” which isn’t a colour for that crucial problem but if you don’t solve it, then this icon becomes “red”. This signalizes a real problem for you and if you don’t solve it in time, then the particular building will be abandoned.
Focus on your needs columns
When you fix all of your problems, you must then focus on three colourful bars. These bars show you which building is needed to be built. To increase your population, you need to have a bigger green column. This column (below) shows you how the zones will be built…
…if you want to build a new district and you don’t have demand in the green bar, then the new buildings won’t be built. Because of that, you must focus on reducing other columns and thus creating more demand for residential neighbourhoods. In case you have more factories/shops, those buildings will need sales and workers as well (do not forget).
Don’t overbuild residential zones
If you have demand for residential zones, you will be able to build new zones. However, be aware of your buildings, because you can’t build a whole new city all at once. When you build, build in smaller neighbourhoods/streets and let the city gradually become more populated. There is nothing worse than having a few “islands” where people live and lots of empty roads.
Also remember that when you demolish particular zones (residential), people usually move away. This is important to know and work with. If you wanted to embark on a major redevelopment, you would have to take it one step at a time.
