After our Cities Skylines power FAQ and the Coal power plant article, we present you another type of power plant you will build when city’s population increases – Oil plants. By game mechanics they are similar to Coal Power Plants, however, their power output is bigger.
Basics about Oil power plants
Oil Power Plant provide 120 MV of electricity which is 3x more than you get from a Coal Power Plant. Their prize is ₡50,000 which is only 2,6x more than a Coal Power Plant. The maintenance cost is ₡1 920 per week which is 3,4x more than Coal Power Plant. The biggest disadvantage is that this plant causes just as much pollution as a Coal Power Plant.
However, the benefits of Oil Power Plants are much more interesting. The prize for their maintenance may be higher, but if you want same output from a Coal Power Plant as from one Oil Power Plant, you have to build three of them (3×40 MV => 120 MV). The maintenance of a Coal Power Plant would make ₡1 680.
From our FAQ Power in Cities Skylines article, we know that the Fusion Power Plant has the best price of ₡ per MV (₡63 per MV at the output). Oil Power Plant costs ₡417 per MV and it’s fourth on the list of the best MV prizes.
Power Plants with much better cost per MW (₡/MW) are listed below. Keep in mind that in later phases, you want to build a Solar Plant or Nuclear Power Plant.

Not enough fuel for Oil Power Plants
Every Oil Power Plant needs Oil to work. Oil can be retrieved from your Oil industry zone (in case you own it) or it can be imported from other cities. With each Power Plant you can see how many weeks they have stored oil…
… the filling of these devices is automatic. If you want guarantee that they don’t run out of fuel, you have to optimize your traffic. If your Power Plant isn’t reached by trucks with oil in time, then there will be outages…
… if you have Oil industry, then it would be a good idea to build Oil Power Plants as close as possible to minimize potential transportation problems. And one final tip.
If you are dependent on your industry, expect to run out of oil (depending on the industry) sooner or later. It makes sense to strive for the most environmentally friendly electricity in the long run. I don’t say that out of conviction, but it is what the data says. 😉
